INCREASING PERFORMANCE

Double-click on the Control Panel's System icon, then click on the Performance tab. Next, click on the File System button. The setting; "Typical Role of This Machine" determines how much space is reserved in the main memory to handle path and filename caching. the Network Server choice allocates space for up to 64 paths and 2,729 filenames compared to the default "Desktop Computer" choice of only 32 paths and 677 filenames. Even if your computer is used strictly for desktop applications, change the Typical Role box to Network Server.

The Read-Ahead Optimization slider determines how much data Windows 95 should fetch every time you retrieve data from your hard disk. System memory is much faster than your hard disk. Read-ahead buffering improves performance by reducing the number of times your machine has to get data from the hard disk. Set the slider all the way to the right, giving Windows 64K of read-ahead buffering.

CD-ROM

Click on the CD-ROM tab in the File System Properties box. The Supplemental Cache Size slider adjusts the room Windows 95 sets aside for read-ahead buffering of your CD. If you use your CD drive frequently, move the slider for the Supplemental Cache Size to "Large", and specify that you have a Quad Speed or Higher CD, even if you don't. This will set aside about 1.2MB for CD caching, and make your CD will run as fast as possible.

Personalize Your Computer

System JpegWant to add a logo or picture to your system? You can even add real or bogus support information if you wish. The picture on the right illustrates what the logo and general information (arrows) on the System applet can look like when you're finished.

If the logo already exists, it is stored in the Windows system directory (normally c:\windows\system) in a file called Oemlogo.bmp. You can create a different bitmap with a maximum size of 180 by 114 pixels. You can make or use anything, including a picture of your children. Save the bitmap to your Windows system directory under the name Oemlogo.bmp. Next, create a file named OEMINFO.INI in the same directory. Follow the format below. The red text denotes the text you can substitute for what ever you want.

[general]
Manufacturer=Put Your Name Here
Model=What ever you want here

The last section is optional. The information here specifies what is displayed in the dialog box (not shown) when the user clicks the Support Information button if you even want one.

[Support Information]
Line1="--------------------------------"
Line2=" You Name"
Line3=" Title"
Line4=" Company Name"
Line5=
Line6=" Email Address"
Line7=" Webpage Address"
Line8="--------------------------------"

You must use sequential line numbers in this section. You can write as much information as you like, as long as the sequence of line numbers is continuous. If you only create a general section, the Support Information button will not appear on the applet as is does in the example.

If you don't have a bitmap you'd like to use or can't create one, drop me a line and let me know what you'd like. I'll do my best to fix you up with one.
